Medical Parasitology. For Medical Students and Practicing Physicians

by WILLIAM G. SAWITZ. pp. xi, 296, 1 colored plate, 90 figs. Philadelphia, The Blakiston Co., 1950. Price $4.25

Wendell D. Gingrich

The author has written a textbook in brief and condensed form as a guide for medical students. Frequent use of the tabular, graphic and outline presentation of material is sure to appeal to undergraduate students of medicine. It is presumed that adequate supplementary lectures and reference reading are required for a satisfactory course when this book is used. The reviewer is in position to recognize the value of brevity and selection of material for a short course. Too many details often defeat the purpose of teaching well the more important points. However, it appears that the author's brevity has lapsed into oversimplification as, e.g., in stating that the "life cycle(s) of the three species of Leishmania are the same" (rather than similar), in omitting the separate sex cells in the graphic presentation of the life cycle of malaria, in omitting the specific names of vectors in the tabulation of arthropod vectors of human diseases, and in specifying developmental periods and feeding habits in outlining the life cycle of "a tick".
