Histoplasmosis: Fourth Case Report from the Canal Zone¹

A case of histoplasmosis of Darling is reported, constituting the fourth human case found on the Isthmus of Panama, and the first since it was discovered here 45 years ago. It is the youngest case on record as far as we can determine. It is important because it is the first undoubtedly indigenous case found here and it substantiates an investigation which indicated that it does exist here. The entity was diagnosed at autopsy. Cultural studies were not successful, but the pathology was characteristic.

A brief review of the history of histoplasmosis is given and the problems which still exist are stated.
