This small volume was prepared primarily for the use of officers of the British Colonial Administrative Services. The author believes that it may also be of use to non-governmental administrative officers, to managers of mines or plantations and to non-medical missionaries.
The author points out that good administration not only requires knowledge about the causes of disease and the means of controlling them but that associated sociological difficulties should be understood and ameliorated even when resulting financial gain is not immediately apparent.
The book is divided into five sections, namely: Health and Disease, Communicable Diseases, Other Diseases, Public Health, and Personal Protection and Organization. The presentation is clear and concise. The use of technical terms is minimal. Nearly half of the volume is devoted to the causes, mode of transmission, symptoms, prevention, control and treatment of the more important communicable diseases. Recently-accepted methods of control and of treatment are mentioned.
