The volume contains 26 chapters most of which describe methods for the identification of pathogenic bacteria or serologic tests for evidence of infection. The streptococci, pneumococci, meningococci, and gonococci are discussed as well as salmonella and shigella, tubercle bacilli, diphtheria bacilli, and brucella. Chapters are devoted to tularemia, cholera, anthrax, glanders, chancroid, granuloma inguinale, and syphilis as well as leptospirosis, infectious mononucleosis, malaria, and pathogenic fungi. The preparation of bacterial media, technic of blood culture and of Rh typing and microbial assay are considered. All of this material is satisfactorily arranged and indexed.

The chapter on malaria seems unnecessarily long and is essentially unchanged from the previous edition or the N.I.H. Bulletin No. 180. The colored plates used in the bulletin have been included and are a worth-while addition. The chapter on syphilis is anomalous since it omits any description of procedures or reagents.
