The Synergistic Action of Penicillin and Streptomycin on Endameba Histolytica Cultures¹

Neither penicillin nor streptomycin is amebicidal in concentrations of 100 to 1000 units per cc. A combination of the two, however, in equal unitage, kills amebae in the first generation at a total concentration of 2000 units per cc., and in the second generation at 1000 units per cc. The latter concentration is found not to be bactericidal, hence the action is probably a direct one rather than an elimination of necessary bacterial products. Therapeutic application of the findings is suggested.
