This account is primarily based on the large collections in the South African Institute for Medical Research.
The region is known for the distinctness and homogeneity of its fauna, which is characteristically expressed in the anophelines, since all belong to the genus Anopheles Meigen (1818) and are included in its subgenera Anopheles Christophers (1915) and Myzomyia Christophers (1915). The recognized species and races, numbering in the neighborhood of one hundred, are systematically considered, the accounts including the synonomy, designation of the type locality, description of the female imago and of the male terminalia with variations, as well as the morphology of the ovum, larva, and pupa when known, supplemented by notes on breeding places, relation to malaria, and distribution. Morphological descriptions are supplemented by a series of excellent plates. There are provided keys to the females, as well as to the larvae, pupae and ova, insofar as these have been described.
