Pneumo-Peritoneum in the Diagnosis of Amebic Liver Abscess

R. H. P. Clark, M.D., M.R.C.P. (Lond.)1, Z. Taylor Bercovitz, M.D.2 AND Reeves F. Jones, M.D.

Pneumo-peritoneum has been used successfully as an aid in the diagnosis of amebic abscess of the liver. In so far as the authors are aware, no such group of cases has been reported in which pneumo-peritoneum was used to visualize Roentgenologically the dome of the liver.

In any area where amebiasis is relatively common the problem of amebic abscess of the liver is of paramount importance. Not infrequently Roentgen-ray studies of the chest reveal changes in the contour of the right diaphragm and some of these are consistent with liver abscess. The method of pneumo-peritoneum was suggested by the author as a valuable adjunct in arriving at the diagnosis. In the experience of all workers in the field, exploratory aspiration of the liver with needle has failed frequently to reveal pus even in the instances where the contour of the diaphragm was suggestive of this condition.
