Report Concerning Certain Anophelines Found Near the Mexican-Guatemalan Frontier¹

During the month of April 1942 we made a journey from Flores in the Department of Petén, Guatemala, via the Rio de la Pasion and the Rio Usumacinta, to Tenosique and Villa Hermosa in the State of Tabasco, Mexico. The principal object of that trip was to collect blood sera for a yellow fever immunity survey. The results of the latter will be reported elsewhere.

Incidental to our other work, however, we did manage to secure specimens of nine species of anophelines at fourteen of the localities visited. As this is virgin territory from an entomological standpoint, it seems worthwhile to make a brief report on what was found, particularly because Anopheles darlingi was discovered on Mexican territory, and also because we obtained the first records of the presence of Chagasia bathanus and A. strodei in the Guatemalan Republic.

Herrera (1) listed eleven species of Anopheles from Guatemala.
