Plasma Vitamin C Levels in a Group of Children before and after Dietetic Adjustment1

D. F. Milam
Cooperative Nutrition Study, Durham, N. C.

Walter Wilkins
State Board of Health, Raleigh, N. C.

1. Low levels of plasma Vitamin C was an outstanding finding in a nutrition survey of a rural North Carolina community. This was correlated with a low intake of Vitamin C rich foods.
2. Striking gains in Vitamin C plasma levels occurred in a group of 34 children when given an adequate but low cost diet over a period of six weeks.
3. It is concluded that the low levels initially found in these children, and in the survey group, are not normal but represent the result of inadequate intake of Vitamin C over varying periods.

Received November 17, 1940.
1 The studies and observations on which this paper is based were conducted with the support and under the auspices of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation and the General Education Board in cooperation with the North Carolina State Board of Health and State Department of Education and Duke University School of Medicine. The chemical determinations were carried out by Assistant Chemist Janet McAfee Ayres under the supervision of Chemist Dr. J. R. Klein in the Cooperative Nutrition Laboratory located in Duke University School of Medicine.
