The first authentic splenectomy followed by recovery was done by Pean in 1867. Since that time the operative technique has been improved until it is now stabilized. Due largely to the success of this operation much of the mystery and speculation surrounding the function of the spleen has been dissipated. Conservative operations on the spleen are now rare and splenectomy remains the operation of choice for traumatic injuries and in the treatment of certain blood dyscrasias.

The author, chirurgien des Hôpitaux d'Alger, presents a scholarly study of the surgical pathology of the spleen in which considerable attention is given to diagnosis and treatment. Surgeons and internists interested in the splenomegalies will find this a useful reference work. It is a paper bound volume of 174 pages. The technique of splenectomy is well illustrated by numerous diagrams and drawings.
