It is rather surprising, in view of our knowledge of the specific value of several drugs and compounds in the treatment of amebiasis, that none of them has, as yet, been employed in the prophylaxis of infection with Endamoeba histolytica. While it is true that the drugs that have so far been found efficient in the treatment of amebiasis could not be used as prophylactics in the case of permanent residents in endemic regions, it is also true that several of them could be employed for this purpose in the case of travelers or in individuals residing for a limited period of time in localities where there is danger of contracting this infection.
During the past few years, especially since tourist traffic to Mexico has increased, the writer has been repeatedly consulted by individuals who have become infected with Endamoeba histolytica while touring in that country, and he has become impressed with the importance of preventing such infections, as many of them have been of a severe type and difficult to eliminate.
