Yaws (Framboesia tropica)

In his Preface the author says: "The purpose of this work is to deal with yaws. The author has examined nearly 6,000 patients with active lesions and over 2,000 with latent yaws." It is thus evident that he is splendidly qualified to discuss the subject and the reader will find in this book a most careful and valuable description of this infection in all of its clinical aspects.

Regarding the possible identity of syphilis and yaws, a subject of perennial interest, the author firmly believes that the two are distinct infections and gives an excellent differential table which confirms his belief, although it will probably not be convincing to those who believe in their identity.

An error in nomenclature may be mentioned for correction in a future edition. On Page 37 it is stated that "Castellani gave the name Spirochaeta pallidula to the new organism but later substituted the more scientific name Spirochaeta pertenue" but the author uses both Spirochaeta pertenue and Spirochaeta pertenuis indiscriminately, while on Page 76 he calls the organism Treponema pertenuis (sic) and on Page 77, Spirochaeta pertenuis.
