1. The basis for chemoprophylaxis of malaria with atabrine ispresented.
2. The results achieved by other investigatorsare briefly reviewed.
3. The factors which may influence therelative effectivenessof antimalarial drugs are outlined.
4.The results of experiments to control malaria by daily prophylacticdoses of 50 mgm. of atabrine in the Harris Neck region of Georgiain 1937 are reported, with a brief summary of the similar experienceduring the previous two years.
5. The rôle of atabrinein the achievement of successis evaluated.
6. The reductionof malaria morbidity by prophylaxis with atabrinewas not dependenton a fall of malarial intensity (or the downcurveof a malarial cycle) nor on meteorologic conditions.
7. Theresults have been so encouraging that a further trialis warranted;consequently, a fourth year's work has been undertakenand willbe reported subsequently.
8. No untoward reactions or toxicsymptoms due to atabrine wereobserved although many individualsreceived as much as 25 gramsof atabrine over the three yearperiod.
