A Case of Verrucous Dermatitis Caused by Hormodendrum Pedrosoi (Chromoblasto-Mycosis) in North Carolina

1. The clinical, pathologic, mycologic and serologic findingsin a case of verrucous dermatitis (chromoblastomycosis) occurringin a native of the United States are described, this being thefirst case due to Hormodendrum pedrosoi to be reported in theUnited States.
2. Single spore isolation from cultures ofthe causative organismrevealed sporulation characteristic ofthree different generaof fungi.
3. Specific complement-fixingantibodies to the fungus werefound in the serum of this patient,and a cross-antigenic relationshipwas demonstrated betweenstrains of Phialophora and Hormodendrumisolated from variouscases of the disease.
4. Iontophoresis treatment with copppersulphate was followedby marked clinical improvement in theskin lesions and by agreat reduction in the number of fungiin the skin.
