Atabrine in the Treatment of Malaria in the Philippine Islands

1. The results of the treatment with atabrine of fourteen cases
of malaria occurring in the Philippine Islands are presented.
2. Atabrine treatment gave excellent results in 11 cases of
benign tertian and 3 cases of malignant tertian infections.
3. One case of blackwater fever occurred in a case of malignant
tertian infection in which atabrine was used successfully.
4.
A five-day course of treatment gave as good results as a
seven-day
course (0.1 gram, t.i.d.).
5. In the later cases, patients
were released from hospital
on the seventh day after instituting
atabrine treatment.
6. No toxic effects or contraindications
to the use of atabrine
were noted.
7. No known relapses have
occurred in one case after four months
and in the remaining
cases after seven to ten months.
