A System of Bacteriology in Relation to Medicine

Vol. VIII. Medical Research Council, Pp. 1–390. London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1931

Chas. F. Craig

This volume of the System of Bacteriology being published by the National Research Council contains sections entitled: Fungi, Streptothriceae, Spirochaetes, Normal Flora, and Swine Erysipelas. The section upon fungi pathogenic to man is written by Ramsbottom, with a chapter considering immunity, sensitization, and systematic infections by Whitfield, and is an excellent consideration of the subject. Actinomycosis and similar conditions are described by Colebrook, Griffith and St. John Brooks and the pathogenic leptothriceae are well described by Ivy Mackenzie.

The most valuable sections in the work are those dealing with the spirochaetes and the diseases produced by them. Hindle considers the spirochaetes in general, the blood spirochaetes, and the leptospiroses, while Harrison considers syphilis, assisted by Bulloch and Hindle. Yaws is well described by Lieut. Colonel Dawson, of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Our knowledge regarding all of these important subjects is well summarized by the authors mentioned and they are to be congratulated upon the excellence of their contributions.
