A System of Bacteriology in Relation to Medicine

Medical Research Council. Volume V. Pp. 1–505. His Majesty's Stationery Office. 1930. London

Chas. F. Craig

This volume, continuing the valuable "System of Bacteriology" being published by the Medical Research Council of England, is well up to the standard of those already published, and contains sections upon glanders, diphtheria, tuberculosis, leprosy, Brucella and anthrax. The authors are Bulloch, Cummins, Eurich, Duncan, Fleming, Gloyne, Fletcher, Griffith, Hewlet, Ledingham, McCluksie, McEwen, McIntosh, Minett, Muir, Okell, St. John-Brooks, Stableforth, Tytler and Whitby.

The outstanding sections in the present volume are those upon diphtheria and tuberculosis. The first, comprising 84 pages, covers the subject in a thorough and interesting manner. The history is dealt with by Bulloch, while the remainder of the section is written by R. Tanner Hewlett. The subject is excellently covered and all of our knowledge regarding Corynebacterium diphtheriae and the diphtheroids is well summarized and discussed. The second, that upon Bacillus tuberculosis, comprising 192 pages, is by several authors, and is the most extensive consideration of the subject that has appeared within recent years.
