Bacteriology and Sanitary Science

By LOUIS GERSHENFELD. Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia, 1929. Pp. 432, with 30 illustrations and 2 plates

C. G. Sinclair

This book is prepared as an elementary text for students of Pharmacy, Chemistry and allied sciences to present the generalities of Microbiology and Sanitary Science.

Part 1, in 207 pages, very accurately and readably presents the subject of Bacteriology, the characteristics, activities, classification and methods of studying bacteria and fungi, a brief outline on specific microörganisms, and a section in greater detail on sterilization, disinfection and fumigation.

Part 2, on Animal Parasitology, in 50 pages, very briefly passes over Protozoa, Metazoa, Arthropods, Rodents, Snakes, and Higher Animals in their relation to the transmission of disease, and ends with a fairly lengthy and practical chapter on insect extermination and insecticides.

Part 3, on Infection, Immunity, Allergy and Biological Products, in 80 pages, gives a good general perspective of these subjects and particularly discusses biological products, their production, storage, potency and diagnostic and therapeutic value.
