This work of 44 pages is devoted to the thesis that no leper can be regarded as negative unless smears are taken from the upper air passages—nose, pharynx, larynx and trachea—by a competent laryngo-rhinologist. It is claimed that in the experience of the leper asylum in Jerusalem, 25 per cent of lepers found negative for two years or more by ordinary examination, were positive when smears from the upper air passages were made by a competent person.

Such findings may well account for the recurrences observed in paroled lepers, and the occurrence of such infection of the upper air passages will require careful investigation in the future prior to granting parole. Nevertheless, this work apparently exaggerates the frequency of this variety of infection, because the comparatively small number of cases studied (83) were, so far as can be judged from the numerous illustrations, and the attached case histories, all old, far advanced cases of leprosy, not considered fit for parole.
