Studies on Vipera Palestinae Venom. Fractionation by Ion Exchange Chromatography*

Shaoul Kochwa, Chaja Perlmutter, Simon Gitter, Jadwiga Rechnic AND Andre De Vries
The Rogoff Medical Research Institute of the Labour Sick Fund, Beilinson Hospital, Petah Tiqva, Israel

Vipera palestinae venom was fractionated by chromatography on DEAE cellulose.

Two neurotoxic and three hemorrhagic fractions were obtained. The calculated recovery of total lethal activity was 75 per cent, about two-thirds of which was neurotoxic, one-third hemorrhagic.

Correlations of biological activities of the various venom components are discussed.

In addition to the known anticoagulant, a procoagulant accelerating the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin in the presence of thrombin was found.

* This work was supported by the Sick Fund of the General Federation of Jewish Labour in Israel, and is part of a thesis submitted by C. Perlmutter to the Tel-Aviv University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for M.Sc. degree in bacteriology.
