An Intestinal Parasite Survey on Rongelap Atoll in the Marshall Islands

1. A survey is reported of intestinal parasitism occurring in69 Marshall Islanders exposed to radioactive fall-out four yearspreviously. This is compared with parasitic infections occurringin 112 nonexposed Marshall Islanders.
2. No significant differencewas found between the two groups.The over-all rates for Entamoebahistolytica, Trichuris trichiuraand hookworm were 18.2, 34.3and 5.5 per cent, respectively.No other important parasiticpathogens were found. Infectedindividuals generally had lowworm burdens and none of the amebiasiscases showed clinicalsymptoms attributable to this infection.
