A New Exam to Certify Physician Knowledge in Tropical and Travel Medicine

Physicians will now have a way to certify their knowledge and credentials in the specialty of tropical medicine and travel health. The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) is now sponsoring, for qualified physicians, an examination leading to a Certificate in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health. The Society is one of the principal organizations worldwide that represents scientists and clinicians concerned with the prevention, treatment, and control of tropical diseases.

The first examination will be given in Baltimore, Maryland on November 30, 1996. Qualifications for physicians to take the examination (see below) are completion of an ASTMH-approved course of study in tropical medicine and two months of overseas experience. However, during the next five years only, the "grandparenting" qualifications that will apply are five years of practice experience and 30 hours of continuing education in tropical medicine and travelers' health, and the overseas experience.
