In 1963, A. N. Clements published The Physiology of Mosquitoes, which with S. R. Christopher's 1960 volume Aedes aegypti (L.), the Yellow Fever Mosquito, formed the backbone of the reference library needed by those interested in how mosquitoes tick. Thirty years later, Alan Clements has rewritten his book and has provided us with a highly detailed and very useful summary of the current state of mosquito biology. The work is now divided into two volumes, with Volume 1 covering development, nutrition, and reproduction and Volume 2 (still in preparation) dealing with sensory reception and behavior. Volume 1 is targeted to the "specialist" and the "informed biologist" and should be of special value to researchers and students of insect science and medical entomology in general. The author's dedication to providing up-to-date information as well as older but neglected work makes this book invaluable to those directly concerned with mosquitoes as vectors of human disease.
