A Colour Atlas of Arthropods in Clinical Medicine

W. Peters. 304 pages. Wolfe Publishing Ltd, Brook House, 2-16 Torrington Place, London WC1E 7LT, England. 1992. £94.50

Donald Heyneman, Ph.D., Professor of Parasitology Emeritus
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, California 94143-0560

This book is a superb companion volume to the author's and Herbert Gilles' A Colour Atlas of Tropical Medicine & Parasitology (Third edition, 1992). These works combine to produce a treasury of color photographs that provide a pictorial survey of a vast range of information, an introductory but useful identification tool, and a sharp awakening from the typical textbook presentation to a dramatic array of closeup views of organisms, vectors, clinical presentations, and epidemiological information. Though titled as atlases, they can be considered pictorial textbooks as well, since a considerable body of introductory material, classification charts, distribution maps, and life-cycle diagrams are included, along with explanatory notes with each photograph or diagram.

The present work has a strong biological-epidemiological focus, in keeping with the subject matter. Identification characteristics are also emphasized, within the constraint of photographic rendition, though charts of key characters are included for some important groups of vectors
