Foundations of Epidemiology

Third edition. By David E. Lilienfeld and Paul D. Stolley. 371 pp. New York, Oxford University Press, 1994. Hardback, $49.95; paperback $27.50

A. D. Brandling-Bennett, M. D., Director
Division of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, Pan American Health Organization, 525 Twenty-third Street, NW Washington, DC 20037-2895

Paul D. Stolley appears as a coauthor of this edition of a popular and widely used epidemiology text initially written by Abraham M. Lilienfeld in 1976 and then revised with his son in 1980. While the basic structure of the book has been retained, the third edition has been revised extensively, with examples from recent studies used throughout. Indeed, the frequent use of references to current literature is perhaps the strongest feature of the book and should make it useful to students and teachers alike. In their preface, the authors state that the "book has been designed as a text for introductory courses in epidemiology wherever they are offered," and they have succeeded, certainly for basic academic courses. Following the introductory chapters, the book covers mortality and morbidity data, randomized clinical trials, community trials, cohort studies, and case control studies, in that order, with concluding chapters on biological (causal) inference
