Experiments in the Therapy of Human Trichuriasis and Hookworm Disease

Seven hundred and thirty-four trichuris and four hundred and fifty-seven hookworm infections were treated on various anthelmintic regimens involving the use alone and/or in combinations of piperazine citrate, piperazine adipate, piperazine phosphate, hexylresorcinol, methylbenzene, diphenthane-70, activated papain, phthalofyne, sodium santoninate, tetrachlorethylene, oil of chenopodium and leche de higuerón. Although some of the results are promising, such as those with the piperazine salts, none are considered really outstanding, cure rates being fifty per cent or less. There is a great need for more effective anthelmintic agents in trichuriasis and hookworm disease; in the meantime, our best results are obtained with a mixture of tetrachlorethylene 2.7 cc. and oil of chenopodium 0.3 cc.
