Introduction to the 1992 Astmh Presidential Address

This afternoon it is a special privilege for me to introduce Don Krogstad, the President of our Society, whom I have known as a colleague and friend over the past 20 years. Don's early years were spent in New York City in the Long Island area. He entered Bowdoin College in 1961 with the intent to study medicine. Graduating with honors in June of 1965, he married Frances March and in September began studies at Harvard Medical School.

Don's first experience with health in the tropics came at the hands of Dr. Tom Weller who recognized in Don a special enthusiasm and arranged an assignment for him with Warren and Gretchen Berggren at the Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti during Don's fourth year at Harvard. Upon completing his M.D. degree, he interned in medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and after a subsequent year as a medical resident at this hospital, he joined the Centers for Disease Control as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in Atlanta from 1971 to 1973.
