This is the first of what is anticipated will become a regular effort to highlight subjects or specific papers that appear in the accompanying issue of the Journal.

On October 8, 1991, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences issued a report entitled "Malaria, Setting a Course for the Future." This report is the result of an 18-month effort by a broadly representative committee led by Dr. Charles Carpenter. The committee was established at the request of three donor agencies of the U.S. Government: the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Agency for International Development, with members of the committee drawn from research institutions, international organizations, universities, and government research facilities. The U.S. Government continues to be the largest source of funds for malaria research activities in the world.
