Hawaii has a long and unique experience with leprosy and continues to have important roles in research, the development of treatment programs, and in public education concerning this disease. In 1989, the public awareness of this role was particularly heightened by the observance of the 100th anniversary of the death of Father Damien de Veuster, recognized world-wide for his work with leprosy patients at Kalaupapa on Molokai.
Among the events supported by the Governor's Coordinating Committee for the Father Damien Centennial was a symposium on Hansen's disease held on 14 December 1989 in Honolulu in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society of Topical Medicine and Hygiene. Funding for the publication of this symposium was provided by the Lani Booth Trust, Honolulu, HI, the American Leprosy Missions International, Greenville, SC, and the Damien Foundation, Brussels, Belgium.
