Foreword

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene is pleased to have an opportunity to publish this remarkable compilation of information. The relevance of the subject matter is unquestioned and the authors are among the most respected professionals in the field of parasitology and tropical medicine. There was initially some question as to the value of such an undertaking in this day of electronic data searches and the remarkable resources offered through the National Library of Medicine. However, the reader will quickly see that much of the material included in this effort would not be revealed through the use of normal, modern search mechanisms. We believe that this publication will be an important resource for workers in the field of tropical medicine for a considerable time in the future. It provides investigators from developed countries with an important opportunity to reconfirm that an enormous among of creditable and important scientific information is being generated by colleagues in less advanced areas which is unavailable through the medium of the publications found in most institutional libraries in the West.
