From the dawning of the Gay Rights Movement in the late 1960s to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, the world has had to acknowledge the existence of a long suppressed homosexual subculture. The expression and self definition of this subculture, in its challenge to the heterosexual norm, may have lead to the epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases that brought about the birth of books such as Diseases In The Homosexual Male.

Chapters 2–8 deal primarily with sexually transmitted diseases. The chapter on Bacterial infections concentrates on Neisseria gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis, covering anal, oropharyngeal, and penile manifestations. Treatment recommendations are up-to-date and well outlined. Of more value, this chapter explores some of the less recognized problems in this community, such as rectal spirochetosis, urinary tract infections from anal intercourse, Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter-associated gastro intestinal infections. Syphilis is covered separately. The spectrum of disease in the gay male is well described.
