Editor's Page Mycoplasma Incognitus: A Workshop

On 13–14 December 1989, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) convened a workshop at San Antonio, TX. The purpose was to critically assess the findings of Shyh-Ching Lo and his collaborators regarding a newly described mycoplasma tentatively named Mycoplasma incognitus. The data and observations in Lo's reports, all of which have been published in the JOURNAL, indicate that M. incognitus may be pathogenic to humans, particularly to AIDS patients. A major concern regarding Lo's research has been whether these observations are based on studies of a contaminant rather than an organism that is truly colonizing the patient population. The workshop was chaired by Joel Baseman, who presented a summary of the proceedings to the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Subcommittee of the NIAID Council on 18 January 1990.
