Introduction

On 7 December 1988, during the 37th Annual Meeting of THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND HYGIENE in Washington, DC, many of those in attendance spent the afternoon at the Paul C. Beaver Symposium, "Parasitology Then and Now." The intent was to recognize the role that Paul has played and continues to play in the development of the fields of parasitology and medicine, in the guidance of numerous students, and in the affairs of the SOCIETY.

This volume contains most of the material presented by his students and associates that afternoon, save 1 manuscript that was not available. The SOCIETY is indebted to those who have made this publication possible and, in particular, to Rodney C. Jung for serving as moderator.
