Introduction of the President, Jacob Karl Frenkel

Members of the Society and guests, it is my pleasure and privilege to introduce Dr. Jacob Karl Frenkel, the President of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Jack Frenkel is the fifth President of this Society to ask me to introduce him, and this must be a record. However, it happens that I have known him since 1940 which is longer than I have known any of the previous Presidents. Let me review Jack's history briefly, including both personal and scientific aspects of his life.

When Jack arrived in Berkeley, California, in 1940 he was a 19-year-old fresh from the educational rigors of a gymnasium education in Germany. His father, Karl, a physician, and mother, Anne Marie, a nurse, believed that the political pressures of national socialism and the onset of war in Europe made it a desirable time to leave Germany. We thank them for this wise decision, as it gave us Jack as a future leader in our field.
