The fourth edition of this well-known text has been improved and pulled together. There are added numerous good sectionsfor example on such fundamental matters as the newer concepts of melanogenesis, pigmented nevi and tumors; on the "lupus erythematosus phenomenon" and the Kveim test in diagnosis; on Thorium X, atabrine and chloroquine in treatment.
The vastness, complexity and diversity of the arts and sciences which must be included and described in a modern "Compleat Dermatology" suggest that the heyday of a "one-man text" may be waning. No one person can hope to be equally proficient in such widely differing fields as dermatologic biochemistry and histochemistry; dermatologic microbiology and immunology; and the clinical diagnosis as well as the specialized surgery, radiation, physical therapy and external topical treatment of the hundreds of different skin diseases, to name but a few examples.
