This text is a well-organized presentation on the subject of medical microbiology. It meets the needs of students without adding burdensome detail. There are six sections comprised of 115 chapters written by 135 contributors. Six section editors insure complete coverage of their disciplines and contribute appropriate introductory material. In addition, there are 14 consulting editors and 23 reviewers.

Chapters are categorized into those which are "general" and those which are "specific" in nature. The former emphasize mechanisms of infection and general fundamental principles. The "specific" chapters are all organized on a common format beginning with an introductory general concepts section for student orientation. Sections follow on properties of organisms involved, pathogenesis, host defenses, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control. Prior to the index, there is a very helpful glossary.

Section I covers the principles of immunology in 15 chapters. It will be the most difficult for the beginning student to comprehend.
