The doyen of American environmental physiologists has given us an unusual, useful and entertaining book. Dr. Dill, now 95 years old, has had a continuously active research career since 1925. He directed the research program at the famous Harvard Fatigue Laboratory from 1927 to 1941, served as a research physiologist in the Army from 1941 to 1945, as Chief Scientist of the Medical Laboratory of the Chemical Corps from 1946 to retirement at age 70 in 1961, as Visiting Professor at Indiana University until 1966, and then as Director of a Desert Research Institute Laboratory at the University of Nevada from 1966 to 1977. Now, in his fifth retirement, he is still active in writing historical accounts of his specialty, and in collecting and reporting accounts of the lives of senior American physiologists.
