This book constitutes the written report of a WHO Scientific Group that met in early 1983 to discuss arthropod- and rodent-borne viral diseases. The book contains sections on virus classification, global and regional public health problems, epidemiological concepts, and diseases and their management, methods for detecting these infections, pathogenesis, associated biohazards, surveillance, prevention and control, preparedness for emergencies caused by these viruses, and excellent recommendations by the Scientific Group. The book was not intended to replace textbook chapters but to update the 1967 WHO Technical Report on arboviruses and human disease. From 1966 to 1983, the recognized number of arthropod- and rodent-borne viruses increased from 200 to 460, of which 97 were known human pathogens. By 1985, these have increased to 504, of which 118 are known human pathogens. Since the 1966 report, great epidemics and significant outbreaks of arboviral and rodent-borne viral diseases have occurred.
