This major survey of public health is a complete revision of Hobson's Theory and Practice of Public Health. In the 25 years since the first publication of that work, the nature and scope of public health, especially international public health, has changed considerably. This revision is intended to be a comprehensive survey of methods to investigate and solve public health problems in light of these changes.

The first volume of this four-volume work addresses the history and development of public health and considers major public health strategies. Volume II will discuss public health promotion, environmental and infectious disease control and coordination of national/international health services. Volume III will consider the application and effectiveness of investigative methods in public health. Volume IV will review the application of epidemiologic methods to specific diseases and to the special needs of children, the handicapped and the elderly.
