Some two million people gathered at Mecca in 1982 for the annual seven-day pilgrimage. The climate and the religious requirements combined to produce a high heat stress environment; heat exhaustion and fatal heat stroke were not uncommon. These facts led the government of Saudi Arabia to convene a workshop in 1983; this volume is the collection of papers from that meeting.

Of the 26 papers, 12 are by contributors from Europe, North America and Australia. These chapters are capsule reviews of well-known data and of the conventional wisdom and describe, in abbreviated form, our present knowledge of temperature regulation, physiology and clinical heat illnesses. These are good reviews, are helpful to a reader who knows nothing about the field, and have useful current bibliographies.

The new data in this text come from the work of Saudi Arabian investigators. Of these, M. Khogali is obviously the leader of the research program, with various colleagues—especially M. K. Y. Mustafa, K. Gumaa and H. El-Sayed—as collaborators in various studies.
