The development of a solid phase radioimmunoassay inhibition test using anti-leishmanial monoclonal antibodies is described for the detection of leishmanial promastigote infections in sand flies, as an aid to epidemiology. As few as 612 Leishmania major promastigotes could be detected in laboratory-bred Phlebotomus papatasi. The test was sensitive and species-specific.
