W. D. Tigertt

It is appropriate that, in this first issue of Volume 34, I should take note of the many years of dedicated service of my predecessor, Paul Beaver, who assumed the responsibilities of editorship in September 1959. His contributions were recognized a few weeks ago by the entire Society. Although his tenure officially ended on 31 December last, he is responsible for the acceptance and editing of more than half of the articles appearing in this issue.

To Paul I also express my appreciation for the many courtesies shown me and the assistance he has given during the past eight-month transition period. It is a pleasure to know that his name will remain on the masthead of the Journal as Editor Emeritus.

There are new names. James R. Murphy, Department of Microbiology, University of Maryland, known to many members of the Society, is the Associate Editor. Maureen McSharry, a graduate of Marietta College, is the Editorial Assistant.
