Plague and Other Yersinia Infections

by THOMAS BUTLER, 220 pages. Plenum Publishing Corp., 233 Spring Street, New York, NY 10013. 1983. Price $22.50

Allan M. Barnes
Plague Branch, Centers for Disease Control, Division of Vector-Borne Viral Diseases, Fort Collins, Colorado 80522

This book is one of a series, Current Topics in Infectious Disease, presented, according to the author, as an overview for students, physicians, and public health workers who wish to gain a greater understanding of the diseases caused by Yersinia pestis, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, and Yersinia enterocolitica.

Following a short introductory chapter, the next six deal respectively with Discovery of the Organism, Epidemiology, Clinical Syndromes and Pathology in Humans, Pathogenesis and Toxins, Diagnosis and Treatment, and Prevention and Control. The author's interests in and enthusiasm for Y. pestis are soon apparent; considerably more than half of the text is devoted to plague, often with anecdotal discussion of the author's experiences in Vietnam and Brazil. For those interested in history, Chapter 2 is devoted to an almost reverential account of Alexandre Yersin's life and career, centering on his discovery of the plague organism.
