Management of Wilderness and Environmental Emergencies

edited by PAUL S. AUERBACH and EDWARD C. GEEHR. 656 pages. Macmillan Publishing Company, 866 Third Avenue, New York, New York 10022

This unusual book "is intended to serve emergency and primary care physicians as a definitive therapeutic guide" as well as to provide other professionals with an authoritative reference source for the management of emergencies related to the environment. However expert the writers and authoritative the text, the subject is obviously only partially within the scope of the field we call "Tropical Medicine." The book warrants review for The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene because certain chapters would definitely be of interest to workers in hostile environments and others who may participate in expeditions in isolated—i.e., wilderness—areas.

The contributors to this book are experts in a group of topics of such diversity that it would require a similar committee of experts to criticize the accuracy of the information presented. The reviewer, being impressed with the lucidity and detail of presentation and the adequate documentation, concedes the accuracy of the information and will confine the review mostly to a description of the book with special mention of the subjects of interest to the tropical medicine worker.
