This is the last of the four "Updates" expected to appear between the publications of the ninth and tenth editions of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. Of the 15 topics discussed all will be of great interest to the internist and family practitioner, but of these only seven are likely to fall within the scope of Tropical Medicine. These latter are "Toxic-Shock Syndrome," "The Expanding Spectrum of Chlamydia trachomatis Infections," "The Gram-Negative Bacillary Pneumonias," "Diagnosis and Prevention of Viral Hepatitis," "Assessment of the New Immune-Complex Assay Technology," "Implications of Recombinant DNA Technology for Medicine," and "Decision Theory and Medical Practice."

Each topic is thoroughly covered and well written, the previous high standards of the publication being upheld.

The toxic-shock syndrome, which received so much attention in the lay news media 2 or 3 years ago is not a phenomenon only of menstruating women using tampons.
