This impressive monograph was written by world authorities on trachoma. This work is intended as a field guide for the general use of the ophthalmologist. Not only does it discuss the diagnosis and treatment of trachoma, but it also discusses the epidemiology of the disease as well as training and health education for population at risk for contracting the disease.

The authors imply that the MacCallan classification is of doubtful value, that is, one either has trachoma or he doesn't. The photographs presented in this book are of excellent quality although this reviewer would have preferred to have seen an outline of the actual methods for scraping the conjunctiva and smearing slides. References contained in this book may not be readily available in the field where it is used; thus this book should have included more "how to do it" information.

Nonetheless, this work is extremely valuable and should find widespread use in most countries with endemic trachoma.
