Parasitology: The Biology of Animal Parasites

The authors preface this fifth edition by writing that the "book is written primarily for the undergraduate college or university student who has completed one basic course in biology and one in general chemistry." Their fourth edition recommended, "at least one general course in zoology and elementary chemistry," presumably to be taken after entering college? Most introductory texts in this field encourage more college course background than this recommendation.

There are nine sections covering a combined total of 26 chapters followed by selected references for each. The section topics are: Introduction, Subkingdom Protozoa, Phylum Platyhelminthes, Phylum Acanthocephala, Phylum Nematoda, Phylum Arthropoda, Miscellaneous Phyla, Ecology of Parasitism, and Evolution of Parasitism. A five page glossary, a half page on publications containing abstracts or indexes, and a 32 page index to this edition, complete the text. The Introduction now includes two chapters, one introducing the subject and the other introducing relevant recent data of immunological, physiological, and genetic nature.
