Tuberculosis in Children

by F. J. W. MILLER. xvii + 294 pages. Churchill Livingstone Inc., 19 West 44th St., New York, N.Y. 1981. $20.00

Margaret H. D. Smith
Department of Pediatrics Tulane Medical Center 1430 Tulane Avenue New Orleans, Louisiana 70112

This is the work of a master clinician who has been interested in childhood tuberculosis for 30 years or more. Twenty years ago, together with two colleagues, Miller published one of the excellent standard volumes on tuberculosis in children (Miller, F. J. W., Seal, R. M. E., Taylor, H. D., J. A. Churchill publ. 1963). This new paperbound book comprises 275 pages, including a long, useful, alphabetical list of references and an index. Its value is enhanced by the author's experience as a World Health Organization Consultant in South East Asia and Africa, and by the good use he has made of information furnished by his many colleagues round the world or the particular tuberculosis problems and peculiarities in their regions.

Divided into two main parts, the first one is devoted to Basic Facts (the evolution of primary infection; tuberculin sensitivity; epidemiology; BCG; and control of tuberculosis), whereas the second part deals with diagnosis and treatment in general, and with disease of each organ and organ system in turn.
