The Heartworm Symposium '80, held in Dallas, Texas, February 2324, 1980, is the second such symposium organized by the American Heartworm Society since that group was organized in 1974. The published symposium consists of five sections with reports on Epizootiology, Laboratory Aids to Diagnosis, Pathology and Clinical Management, Chemotherapy, and Thiacetarsamide.
The section on Epizootiology is composed of six papers, three of which review the distribution of Dirofilaria immitis in the North Central U.S. and Canada. From the information presented, it appears that infection with D. immitis in this area is not spreading at an alarming rate. Two interesting papers on the effects of low temperature on the development of D. immitis in the mosquito support what one may have suspected, that larval development can proceed even if ambient temperatures drop to as low as 50°F. However, temperature drops have greater effects earlier in development than later. The section contains an excellent compilation of present knowledge about mosquitoes and their susceptibility to D. immitis.
