These three volumes review malaria with emphasis on the great amount of information generated by experimental studies in the past few years. The first volume consists of five chapters covering epidemiology, chemotherapy, morphology, and metabolism. The opening chapter by W. H. Wernsdorfer, the most general in the three volumes, presents interesting accounts of malaria history, the taxonomic status and life cycle of the parasites, epidemiology of human malaria and its importance in the world. P. C. C. Garnham draws on his great experience in presenting the common features of the malarias, followed by discussions of the malarias in man and representative species in the nonhuman primates, rodents and birds. In discussing the chemotherapy of malaria, W. Peters writes of the principles of antimalarial drug screening, experimental models and procedures, pharmacology and mode of antimalaria action, experimental drug resistance, guide to prophylaxis and treatment in man, and future research directions.
